FAQ

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine, thousands of years old, involving the insertion of fine, sterilised needles into specific points on the body. Each point is connected to a meridian, and has a specific set of functions. These meridians are energetic pathways or highways running through the body which transmit qi (energy, vital life force, or prana). The effects of acupuncture come from influencing the qi, or energy. This is why, in many cases, a distance session or a needle-free session can be equally effective.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a trained professional. Ensure that your acupuncturist has undergone sufficient training in a program that includes extensive supervised clinical training.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies greatly depending on your needs and symptoms. In some cases, the issue will resolve or drastically improve after a single treatment. In other cases, particularly if you've had something for a long time, acupuncture will provide some immediate relief and, with regular sessions over time, will resolve.

Does it hurt?

Most patients feel little to no pain. Some points will produce more sensation than others, and some needling methods are designed to elicit a stronger response than others. This varies depending on personal tolerance to physical sensations, and how you feel about needles! If you prefer a needle-free treatment, you can always come in for Reiki and acupressure instead.

Can anyone have acupuncture?

Yes, acupuncture can be beneficial in almost any case. It is contraindicated in cases of bleeding disorders, uncontrolled movements, and severe or medical emergency.

What should I expect?

If you haven't already completed an intake over the phone, I will ask you some questions about your symptoms and medical history, and will then feel your pulse and have a look at your tongue (these are key components of diagnosis). Depending on the diagnosis and treatment plan, your treatment session may include cupping massage, a back treatment (lying face-down), a front treatment (lying face-up), as well as medical Qi Gong and acupressure.

Expect a pleasant, relaxing experience. You may feel sleepy after the session.

How often should I have a session?

This is a very personal choice. In terms of managing a condition, weekly or twice a month is advisable until you start feeling better. You can then stretch to once a month, and then return whenever you feel the need. Some people like the effects and return regularly as part of their self-care routine. You do not have to be unwell to have acupuncture. In fact, it is considered an important part of maintenance. In ancient China, court doctors were only paid when their patient was well. If they were sick, it was assumed that it was their acupuncturist's fault.

Is acupuncture safe to have during pregnancy?

Yes, acupuncture is safe for pregnancy. There are several points that are contraindicated during pregnancy which should be avoided by your acupuncturist. (These points can be used to great effect in the 3rd trimester to bring on labour.)
