Menopause & Perimenopause | Acupuncture for Women's Health
Menopause
“At seven times seven years [i.e. age 49], the Ren vessel becomes deficient, the Taichong vessel declines, the Tian Gui [menstrual blood] is exhausted, and the menstrual pathway no longer flows.”
— Huangdi Neijing, Suwen, Chapter 1
This quote was written around 2,200 years ago, demonstrating Chinese medicine's proven track record of focusing on and understanding women's health.
The term 'perimenopause' is used widely today, but this wasn't the case even five years ago - it was coined initially to refer to the time immediately before cessation of the menstrual period, as opposed to several years before. There is undeniably however an increased prevalence of women experiencing hormonal-related symptoms in their late 30s and early 40s. I am wary of pathologising this as 'perimenopause' because in many cases these symptoms have nothing to do with menopause, but rather relate to the fact that lifestyle factors and health issues often hit our reproductive health first. The health of your menstrual cycle is a good indicator of your health in general, and therefore treating imbalances with acupuncture, herbal medicine, and by making lifestyle changes can often make you feel much better.
Symptoms that acupuncture can help with include hot flashes, mood swings, irregular cycles, painful periods, heavy bleeding, hair loss, dry throat, dry skin, palpitations, disrupted sleep, and fatigue.
